Exclusive Interview: Laura Vandervoort on “V” & Smallville
Laura Vandervoort, who stole the hearts of genre fans when she played Supergirl on Smallville, is returning to television this Tuesday on ABC’s “V”, in which she plays the alien Visitor Lisa, whose job is to bring disenfranchised teens into the Peace Ambassador Program, with the ultimate intent of using them against humanity. In the following interview, Laura talks about both series.
SCI FI TV ZONE: You are shooting in Vancouver – any chance that you might hop over to Smallville?
LAURA VANDERVOORT: Oh gosh, there’s been a few background performers I did Smallville with, and they’re coming up and saying, “So, are you coming back?” And I don’t know. I mean, I’m in Vancouver, I don’t know if they know I’m here, but it would be nice to hop over and be part of the show again. I loved Smallville. It was everything to me. You know, it was the first role that put me out there in front of America and the world – it’s played all over the world – and it’s helped me get in the door for other projects that were grittier and different, that I would have never been considered for because of the way you look, or the way they’ve seen you in the past. I owe everything to Smallville, and I’d love to go back, I don’t know if they’re going to have a storyline for me, I’m not sure what direction they’re taking the show in, so fingers crossed. I’d love to go back before the show is done.

SCIFI TV ZONE: Have you had the chance to get a better handle on who Lisa is as a person?
LAURA VANDERVOORT: As a reptilian or a person? As a character I feel like I had a fairly good grasp on her at the beginning, but as we’ve had different directors come in, and I’ve chatted with the producers, I’m definitely learning more. There’s a lot of stuff they aren’t going to tell us that might impact our performance and might give away any secrets, but from what I’ve understood, she’s literally just a 17-year-old who is there for peace, and she’s got orders that were given to her, and she’s going to follow through with them. That’s how they’re trained, and she’s also interested, similar to Supergirl, in taking in Earth and the culture. But right now she’s exploring.
SCIFI TV ZONE: You say she’s there for peace –
LAURA VANDERVOORT: I was just going to say, the way you can look at it is she’s been given an order to get humans to join the Ambassador Program, and that’s her task and that’s what she’s there for. She’s very focused, and she’s getting the best possible humans she thinks are appropriate for the job.
SCIFI TV ZONE: Do you think she’s going to develop a more sympathetic side?
LAURA VANDERVOORT: I think so, without giving too much away, I think when she experiences a bit of the hate that’s going on with the Visitors being on earth, and protestors, some of the things she sees impact her more than she expects. She feels more for some of the humans, I think, and I think she’s learning more about dealing with conflict and not being wanted.
SCIFI TV ZONE: I think a great arc would be to see her working with the humans.
LAURA VANDERVOORT: I have to say that’s what I want. But I don’t know where they plan to go with it. Especially because she’s focused on Tyler right now, and I’d like to see that develop into something, and perhaps that’s where the Fifth Column will come in.

It looks like the Sookie Stackhouse novels by Charlaine Harris will be coming to an end if the author has anything to say about. She has signed a contract to write three more books after the one that is to be on book shelves in May and “those may be the last three”.
It seems the Olympics will affect the airing of the final season of Lost on ABC. After the first few episodes of the series air in January, the show will “take a few weeks off” during the second half of February and will return once the Olympics are over in early March. No official date has yet been announced for the show’s return in January.
The huge red V’s that were to be written in the sky in preparation for the premiere of the new ABC series V has been canceled as the network worried the publicity stunt would scare those who had no idea why giant, frightening red letters were suddenly appearing all around the nation.
With the cancellation of Trauma, the odds of an early return for Chuck is likely to happen in January with NBC ordering six additional episodes of the series.
It has been confirmed that Elizabeth Mitchell will not be returning for the final season of Lost, as her character, Juliet, did indeed die after the bomb blast that was the culmination of last season. And in more Lost news, a new character is being sought: Kendall. She is described as an “intellectual beauty with a sharp edge to her wit,” who is caught committing corporate espionage and has to lie her way out. This could a potential recurring role for a female actress in her mid-30s.
BBC One has announced it will air the latest David Tennant Doctor Who special, Doctor Who: The Waters of Mars, on Sunday, November 15 at 7 p.m. And, BBC America will air the movie on December 19 at 9 p.m.
NEW DEVELOPMENT SLATE
Syfy has given a thirteen-episode order to an American remake of British supernatural dramedy series Being Human, which focuses on the lives of three twenty-somethings–a vampire, a werewolf, and a ghost–who live together. No writer is attached to the remake and the hunt is on for a scribe to adapt the British series for an American audience. Meanwhile, the British version of Being Human is slated to launch its eight-episode second season on BBC One next year.
NEW SEASON TALLY
The following is another run down of the general state of the TV shows for the fall season – not just the sci-fi(ish) based shows:
To date the following new and returning shows have been given full season pick-ups by their respective networks:
Community on NBC
Mercy on NBC

Cougar Town on ABC
The Middle on ABC

As is the case every season, there are a number of shows that are struggling in the ratings and could potentially be pulled from the schedule, could be canceled at some point or their home network could stick with any of them for the full season. There is no clear cut answer as yet. Therefore, this list is speculative at best:
Brothers on FOX

The Forgotten on ABC
Fringe on FOX

“Being Human”: American Style
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Syfy has picked up the rights to make an American version of Toby Whithouse’s brilliant BBC series Being Human, about a vampire, werewolf and ghost who share a house together. It is truly much more dramatic than the premise would seem on the surface. The network has commited to 13 episodes of the show, with plans to debut it either in Summer or Fall 2010.
Says Syfy president Dave Howe, “We’ve always been keen on vampires and werewolves, and we loved the originality of Being Human, the fact that the fantastical creatures in it are very young, accessible and charming.” He also emphasized that this will not be a slavish remake of the British version. “V” Episode Two: “There is No Normal Anymore”
EXCLUSIVE: “V” Director Yves Simoneau
Director Yves Simoneau, who had previously collaborated with executive producer Scott Peters on the pilot episode of The 4400, spoke to Visitors Among Us while in the midst of production of what would end up being the last episode of the new “V” shot prior to the show commencing on its second production hiatus. In this excerpt from the interview, he discusses his reasons for doing the pilot and his feelings about the show’s potential.
VISITORS AMONG US: Is this the kind of project that attracts your attention?
YVES SIMONEAU: I’m very eclectic in terms of what I like. I did big historical war movies, and I did some noirs and then a bit of science fiction, so when I got the call I was very interested in going back to that world a bit, because I hadn’t visited there for a awhile. I don’t have a specific affinity for other things – I’m interested by a variety of things.
VISITORS AMONG US: What was it about “V” that made you want to do it?
YVES SIMONEAU: There’s something about that notion of an alien “country” coming to earth that feels somewhereat relevant to what’s happening here on this planet, because you can draw a lot of parallels to a lot of things. If you have a powerful nation that’s decided to go to another nation and integrate, or try to absorb, there’s a lot to compare to. And also this notion of foreign life existing, which I believe in – I think it would be a little short-sighted not to think of it. And in a way, people are getting more open to it, changing the way we’re thinking about that sort of question. Before, we were the know-it-alls, when people were saying “I believe in aliens,” you were treated like a fool. Now people are more and more open to the idea that there is life out there in one form or another. I’m not saying they’re Vs – but I don’t think we’re alone in the universe. Also, if you remember the original, it’s something that made an impact, so you’re receiving a sort of a trademark to play with, which is always a big deal. All that made it very interesting.
VISITORS AMONG US: Did you go back and look at the original before you shot this?
YVES SIMONEAU: I didn’t do that until later in the process, because I was concentrating on what we had in front of us. I tried to address basically the questions we had about the script, and the production, and then later on, when I was somewhere in the middle of it, I started looking at it, just to make sure I wasn’t completely either disconnected from it or too connected to it. Now that I had established my own position, I wanted to put it in relationship with the original, and it was a lot of fun, because we were very different, but at the same time I think we respected a lot of what made it work in the first place. It was a good re-imagination, I think it worked.
VISITORS AMONG US: What are the primary differences between the approach taken with the original and the approach in 2009?
YVES SIMONEAU: It has more shades of gray in it, it is not as black and white, in a sense that a lot of people will adopt the aliens as their favorite characters, and I think that in that regard it’s a little different – in the original, most of them were presented as invaders and bad people, and this time we’re presenting a little variety. We are not totally sure about their real intent- – we know they want to take over, and we know there are bad elements there, but there is also a whole dimension of that group of people that is positive, and I think that’s what’s going to make it interesting in the long run. The original miniseries lasted for four hours. This let’s you do what you want for many hours so you have to develop a richer, more complex environment for the characters so you have enough to go on with. I think this new version is trying to connect with the reality of today, and so in that way it is connected to the original, but it is different from the original. And that’s established the right balance there.
VISITORS AMONG US: Obviously the original was a re-telling of the Holocaust – for today’s audience, what are the allegories?
YVES SIMONEAU: It’s more about how do you deal with foreign people, foreign elements, foreign objects, how do you deal with something that doesn’t belong in your world? And I think it’s beyond the Holocaust, and all that, it’s about humanity as a whole, how do we behave when something really foreign hits us? I think that’s where I would put it. I don’t think it’s as precise as the original was, in terms of representing the Holocaust or something of that nature. I think it’s something bigger than that – not that the Holocaust wasn’t big, but it’s going beyond that specific event – it’s that event, and all the events like that. And not only here, but from everywhere. It’s about what makes us human, and how we react and survive and move on and develop.

Episode 13
“Fated to Pretend”
Written by Gabrielle Stanton & Harry Worksman
Directed by David Barrett
Mick is enjoying the idea of being human again, but when Beth is threatened by the killer of her BuzzWire boss Maureen, he feels he has no choice but to ask Josef to turn him back into a vampire so that he can rescue her.
“I remember reading that scene with Mick and Josef in the loft when Mick is going off to be the hero, and Josef slaps him around a bit and says, ‘You’re out of your mind,’ and Mick realizes what he has to do,” says O’Loughlin. “So he reluctantly asks Josef to turn him back. I thought it came out great and I thought it was an evocative scene. That’s one of the things I’m intrigued by about these creatures – there’s such ambiguity to them, which this scene played in to sexually.”
Episode 14
“Click”
Written by Erin Maher & Kathryn Reindl
Directed by Scott LautanenWhen a member of the paparazzi takes photos that could expose the truth about Mick, Beth does the unthinkable: she goes to Josef to get him to take care of the “situation,” creating a pact between them and that Mick knows nothing about. Meanwhile, Mick and Beth decide to start pursuing a romantic relationship.
“What I like about the episode is the fact that it showed the risk that Mick faces on a daily basis in terms of possible exposure,” O’Loughlin says. “Between this paparazzi guy and the fact that D.A. Talbot has a file on Mick, you start to explore what could happen if this part of the lives of these creatures were exposed public. And with Beth going to Josef – wow! Knowing what her request will mean for this photographer shows a bit of ruthlessness on her part, but also the depth of her feelings for Mick.”
Episode 15
“What’s Left Behind”
Written by Jill Blotegovel
Directed by Chris Fisher
Flashbacks illuminate Mick’s past when the rescue of a kidnapped youth suggests that the boy may be the grandson of a woman Mick had had an affair with back during World War II. For Beth, life is changing as she quits BuzzWire and is offered a position of “civilian investigator” for the DA’s office.
“The subject matter in this episode is pretty great, and there’s a lot of potential for storytelling dealing with Mick’s past,” notes O’Loughlin. “Think about it: you’re looking at this guy who looks like he’s twice as old as Mick is, but could be his son. I felt like this was the strongest of the four that we did when we came back from the strike. I enjoyed playing this different version of Mick and this different side of him. Sometimes you wonder if this guy has the capacity to feel anything above and beyond what we’ve seen, and I kind of wanted to look a little deeper. Essentially he was faced with the things he wants most: his humanity back, his mortality and the chance to grow old and die. Which is a strange thing to want, because it goes against what we as humans think we want. We want to stay young. But he faces that in this one, and he has the hope that maybe his bloodline is carrying on. That was really fun to play. There was no shortage of drama or stakes in that episode.”
Episode 16
“Sonata”
Written by Ethan Erwin
Directed by Fred Toye
In the series finale, an exploration of the vampire culture and vampire justice is explored when a female vampire threatens to expose every vampire in Los Angeles. Towards the end, Beth wants to call the relationship off with Mick, but he declares his love for her and the two of them kiss passionately as they embrace the future.
“It felt like we did some pretty cool stuff in this one,” says O’Loughlin. “It was great seeing the different vampires together and have us out on this mission. Some very nice performances in it.”
The standout moment for him, naturally, is the climax when Beth says they can’t be together – largely because of the codes governing the vampires — but he nonetheless comes back into her apartment and the two begin to kiss.
“He’s trying to keep the boundary there and the reality is that he can’t allow, despite what his heart says, this human girl to dictate the moral code of something that’s been around for thousands and thousands of years. So he will always have boundaries there; he is a vampire. But then there’s the thing that he’ll always love her, too. That’s always been the great quandary of that character. Then he leaves and what followed just came out of the moment. I was walking away from the apartment and I stopped outside the door and stood against the wall for a moment before going back inside. I wanted to continue that thread in the series, that feeling, that there is a wall between them that will always be there no matter what. But in that moment he decides he’s still gonna have a go at it. The love is too strong, he’s not going to walk away and he’s still going to try and make it work.”
Despite its premature cancellation, this final moment in Moonlight at least fulfilled the promise of the show’s premise, having these two characters from different worlds uniting.
Fringe: Behind the Scenes Videos
To coincide with the debut of season two of Fringe, Britain’s Sky1 offered up an extensive behind the scenes look at the making of the series, exploring different aspects of the show.
